Do you have problems with swollen gums?
Swollen gums look and feel enlarged and may even bulge or protrude. Sometimes the triangle-shaped area of gum between the teeth swells. While common, this type of inflammation is typically uncomfortable.
What can cause swollen gums?
A Mount Sinai article lists a number of factors make gums swell, including:
Gum disease (gingivitis)
Infection due to a virus or fungus
Malnutrition
Dental appliances that don’t fit well (dentures or partials)
Pregnancy
Food debris
Medication side effects
Over sensitive to mouthwash or toothpaste
Scurvy
Are there actions can you take at home to prevent this problem?
Here are some guidelines to help you avoid gum inflammation:
Eat a diet that includes vegetables and fruits and that is well-balanced. Avoid foods and drinks that contain sugar.
Mouthwashes, tobacco and alcohol can irritate your gums. So can certain brands of toothpaste that are abrasive. Avoid these substances as much as possible if you notice your gums swelling.
Regular dental visits, every six months along with brushing and flossing daily are good preventatives against swelling.
If you take medications, notice whether your gums swell in reaction to the drug. If so, discuss with your doctor what other options are available.
What types of things do dentists consider when examining gums for inflammation?
Dentists gather information about the following:
Bleeding gums
How long inflammation has gone on
Whether inflammation has changed
Frequency of brushing teeth
Type of toothpaste the patient sues
Other oral products being used
When the last professional cleaning was
Medications the patient takes
Recent changes in toothpaste or mouthwash
Additional symptoms including bad breath, pain or sore throat
