Hydrogen Peroxide: Is It Safe to Gargle with It?

Cover for Hydrogen Peroxide: Is It Safe to Gargle with It?

Hydrogen peroxide is a common antiseptic. People use it to clean minor cuts and disinfect surfaces, and its oxidizing action kills bacteria. Diluted, it can be used as an occasional mouth rinse, but only the right strength and only the right way.

Which Hydrogen Peroxide Is Safe for Gargling?

According to Medical News Today, use only the 3% concentration sold in drugstores. Never use food-grade hydrogen peroxide, which is 35%. It can cause serious stomach and intestinal injury.

Do not swallow the solution. Swallowing can cause an upset stomach or vomiting. Do not let children gargle with it if they might swallow it.

How to Gargle with It

  • Use only 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • Mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts water
  • Gargle for 30 seconds, then spit it out
  • Limit use to a few times a week

Some foaming in your mouth is normal. If irritation develops and does not go away within a few hours, stop using it.

What Can It Do?

Because it kills bacteria, a diluted rinse may:

  • Reduce bacteria in your mouth, which can help with minor throat irritation
  • Help clean minor mouth sores. The foam it makes lifts away debris and dead cells
  • Lighten surface stains slightly with repeated use. It is not a substitute for professional whitening

A rinse does not replace brushing, flossing and regular dental checkups. If your gums bleed, your mouth sores last more than two weeks, or your sore throat does not improve, see a dentist or doctor rather than relying on a home rinse.
