Dental emergencies can escalate rapidly — what starts as a cracked tooth or minor pain can lead to serious infection if left untreated.

What Is a Dental Emergency?

The most common dental emergencies that our dentist sees are:

Broken or Fractured Tooth

A broken or fractured tooth can happen from an injury, accident, or from biting on something hard. A broken tooth may or may not cause pain, swelling, or sensitivity, but will require immediate treatment to prevent further tooth loss. If possible, save any broken tooth fragments in milk or saliva and bring them to your appointment.

Severe Tooth Pain

Intense, persistent tooth pain — especially when combined with swelling or fever — is a warning sign that should never be ignored. It may indicate an abscess, deep cavity, or cracked tooth root. We will diagnose the cause and provide immediate pain relief.

Dental Infection or Abscess

Infection can be caused by multiple issues and can involve the teeth or the gum surrounding the teeth. Common signs of infection are pain, swelling, and even pockets of pus. A dental abscess is a serious condition that can spread beyond the mouth if not treated promptly. Do not wait — call us immediately if you notice swelling in your jaw or face.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If a tooth has been knocked out, time is critical. Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently with water, and — if possible — reinsert it into the socket. If reinsertion isn’t possible, keep it moist in milk or saliva. Call us immediately; the sooner we see you, the better the chance of saving the tooth.

Lost Filling or Crown

A lost filling or crown exposes the underlying tooth to bacteria, temperature sensitivity, and further damage. It is not always painful, but it needs attention. A temporary dental cement (available at pharmacies) can protect the tooth until you can see us.

Broken Appliance

Dental appliances such as complete dentures, partial dentures, bridges, crowns, and mouth guards can crack, break, and become non-functional. This can further affect your smile and your daily activities. If a broken appliance is causing injury to soft tissue, call us right away.

What to Do Before Your Appointment

While waiting to be seen, you can take these steps to manage discomfort:

  • Pain relief — Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help reduce pain and inflammation
  • Cold compress — Apply ice wrapped in a cloth to the outside of your cheek for 10–20 minutes to reduce swelling
  • Rinse with warm salt water — This helps keep the area clean and may relieve discomfort
  • Avoid chewing on the affected side

Same-Day Appointments Available

We understand that dental emergencies don’t follow a schedule. That’s why we offer same-day appointments to address urgent dental needs as quickly as possible. Whether it’s a weekday or after hours, reach out to us and we’ll do our best to see you right away.

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dental Care

What counts as a dental emergency? Any situation involving severe pain, swelling, bleeding, a knocked-out tooth, or a broken tooth is a dental emergency. If you are unsure, call us — we will help you determine whether you need to come in right away.

Should I go to the ER or a dentist for a dental emergency? For dental problems, a dentist is almost always the better choice. Emergency rooms can treat infections with antibiotics and manage pain, but they cannot perform dental procedures. For a dental emergency, call us first. If you have severe swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest ER immediately.
