Teeth Whitening

A Brighter Smile in About an Hour

Coffee, tea, red wine, and time all leave their mark on your teeth. Professional teeth whitening at Hutto Hippo Family Dental lifts those stains far more effectively than store-bought products, and with in-office whitening you can leave with a noticeably brighter smile after a single visit. We proudly serve patients from Hutto, Taylor, Round Rock, Pflugerville, and Georgetown.

We offer two options: in-office whitening for fast results, and custom take-home whitening trays for gradual whitening and touch-ups.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

In-office whitening uses a professional-strength whitening gel that is applied and monitored by our team, so you get dramatic results safely in one visit of about an hour.

How in-office whitening works:

  1. Exam first — we make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and record your starting shade.
  2. Protecting your gums — a protective barrier is applied along your gumline so the whitening gel only touches your teeth.
  3. Whitening — the whitening gel is applied in short sessions of about 20 minutes, usually two or three in one visit.
  4. Your new shade — we rinse, compare your new shade to where you started, and go over aftercare.

Why patients choose in-office whitening:

  • Results in one visit — teeth often lighten by several shades in about an hour. Individual results vary.
  • No whitening light needed — the gel works on its own, without heat lamps or lasers.
  • Made with sensitivity in mind — the gel contains potassium nitrate and fluoride, which help reduce sensitivity and support your enamel, and it’s formulated to help keep teeth hydrated during treatment.
  • Gum protection — the protective barrier keeps the whitening gel off your gums.

What to Expect After Whitening

Your teeth may keep settling into their final shade over the next 24–48 hours. During that time:

  • Avoid staining foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas, and berries
  • Avoid tobacco, which stains freshly whitened teeth quickly
  • Expect possible mild sensitivity for a day or two; a desensitizing toothpaste can help

With good habits and occasional touch-ups, whitening results can last a year or more.

Take-Home Whitening Trays

Prefer to whiten gradually at home? We make take-home whitening trays custom-fitted to your teeth, along with professional whitening gel and clear instructions. Custom trays hold the gel evenly against your teeth and keep it away from your gums, unlike one-size-fits-all store trays.

Many patients combine the two: in-office whitening for a fast, dramatic start, then take-home trays for touch-ups that keep their smile bright.

Professional Whitening vs. Store-Bought Products

Over-the-counter strips, trays, and toothpastes use lower-strength whitening agents and one-size-fits-all designs, so results are usually slower and less even. Overusing them can also irritate gums and make teeth sensitive. With professional whitening, we check your teeth and gums first, choose the right approach for you, and protect your gums during treatment.

Is Teeth Whitening Right for You?

Whitening works best on natural teeth with yellow or brown stains from food, drinks, tobacco, or aging. Before whitening, we make sure your teeth and gums are healthy. If you have cavities or gum disease, we’ll treat those first.

A few things to know:

  • Dental work doesn’t whiten. Crowns, veneers, bonding, and tooth-colored fillings won’t change color. If you have dental work on your front teeth, we’ll help you plan your whitening so everything matches.
  • Some stains respond less. Deep gray stains, such as those from certain medications or a tooth injury, may not lighten much. In those cases, veneers or bonding may give you a better result.

Does Insurance Cover Teeth Whitening?

Most dental insurance plans don’t cover teeth whitening because it is a cosmetic treatment. We’ll go over the cost with you before your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening

How long does in-office teeth whitening take? About an hour. The whitening gel is applied in two or three short sessions during a single visit, and most patients see a noticeably brighter smile before they leave.

How many shades whiter will my teeth get? Many patients see their teeth lighten by several shades, but results depend on your starting shade and the type of stains. We’ll record your starting shade so you can see the difference.

Will teeth whitening make my teeth sensitive? Some patients notice mild, temporary sensitivity for a day or two after whitening. The whitening gel we use contains ingredients that help reduce sensitivity, and we can recommend a desensitizing toothpaste if you need it. Let us know before your visit if your teeth are already sensitive.

Is professional teeth whitening safe for my enamel? Yes, when it’s done under a dentist’s care and as directed. We check your teeth and gums before whitening and protect your gums during treatment.

How long do whitening results last? Results can last a year or more. Coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco will gradually stain teeth again, so many patients use take-home trays for occasional touch-ups.

Can I whiten my crowns or veneers? No. Whitening only works on natural tooth enamel. If your crowns or veneers no longer match your teeth after whitening, we can talk about replacing them to match your new shade.
